Safety PlanThe main objectives of the March for Racial Justice (M4RJ)sister-march/rally in Providence’s India Point Park are: to demonstrate in solidarity
with the National Marchers, raise awareness of local anti-racism activism, and to engage our allies in progressing anti-racism initiatives. Much
planning has gone into this event including provisions for safety which are outlined below.
It is important that attendees to this event read and understand this safety plan and consult it during the rally if needed. This rally is intended to be a non-violent, intersectional, progressive event. Those who attend this event are expected to practice non-violence throughout. In the face of provocation, M4RJRI crews will be prepared to distract and disarm and thus it is expected that attendees will ignore instigation and respond non-violently. Additionally, this event is one to benefit progress and respect thus, it is expected that attendees will not litter or harm the property or equipment. Please collect any belongings you bring and remove them from the park when you leave.
The M4RJRI logistics crew will do their best to ensure that the site of the rally is free of obstacles prior to its commencement however, it will be important that attendees practice situational awareness coming and going to the event and during the event. Please watch where you step, hold handrails when walking up and down steps, and do not climb on infrastructure outside of the playground equipment at the park. Parents or guardians of young children: there will be volunteers in the designated family area for activities however, we ask that you keep watch over and supervise your children. Allow children on the playground at your own risk as there will not be supervision of that area available.
The park is surrounded by a bike path that flows east to west north and south of the field. Attendees must be aware of this bike path and make every effort to not block the bike path and beware of bike traffic when crossing the path. In the event of a collision between a walker and a biker, please flag down a member of the medic team or safety team for assistance/first aid.
Safety Team & Medics
There will be a crew of at least 5-10 trained medics at the event who will be able to administer CPR or first aid if needed. There will be an additional M4RJRI safety team who can also assist with first aid as well as directing attendees to the evacuation routes and shelter locations if needed. The evacuation routes and shelter locations are highlighted on the attached map. The Safety Team and certain Medics will be called out at the beginning of the event and will be identifiable by red arm bands. In the event vaccination or shelter is required, attendees should follow the designated evacuation routes and heed the direction of the Medics and Safety Team.
Adverse Weather or Shelter-in- Place Event
In the event of known adverse weather an indoor rally location will be announced. In the event of unexpected adverse weather such as lightning, heavy wind and rain, or hail, the Safety Team may advise attendees to take shelter under the “overpass shelter”(Purple box) following “emergency route north” (both marked on the attached map). For a more significant “shelter- in- place” even in which an announcement is made at the speaker’s podium that attendees are to take “shelter-in- place, indoors,”(orange box) “emergency route west” should be followed to the Hilton Garden Inn across the footbridge. Once inside attendees will be instructed where to seek shelter.
Conflict Resulting in Violence or Harassment
Attendees are reminded to remain non-violent in such a situation. In the event of violence or harassment towards you, ignore the provocation and walk away. If you see a fellow attendee being harassed or struck, again do not respond and do your best to help the victim get away from the instigator while staying safe yourself. Call out if you feel significant danger is eminent and/or look for the Safety Team and inform them of the issue.
In the event a child gets lost, please contact a member of the medic or safety team immediately or notify a person at the speaker podium. If you see a child without a guardian, please escort them to the family area and let someone on the safety team know.
